Plan B by Pete Wilson

Disclaimer: I received this book for free from Thomas Nelson Publishing in exchange for writing this review on my blog.

In “Plan B”, Pete Wilson tackles an issue that followers of Jesus deal with on a regular basis.  “What do you do when God doesn’t show up the way you thought he would?”  We have all had a dream at one time or another.  Or we have had some kind of plan that we intended to see through to completion granting us happiness and enjoyment of life.  But how often do those dreams or plans crash and burn without warning sending our lives into a painful and uncontrollable chaos?  This is a path that many of us have walked in one form or another and there are no maps or compasses to bring us to the other side of the pain.  The idea of this book was birthed out of the many Plan B situations that Pete has walked through on his own and with others.  And it is through that experience that he offers some help in how to respond when our dreams and our plans crumble right in front of us.

I really enjoyed reading through this book.  Because I read Pete’s blog, I am already familiar with his stories of family and church life.  And this book brought that same kind of authentic story telling, sharing how he and others have encountered different plan b’s.  The book is well organized and read very easily to me.  The stories helped me to relate to others who were facing different problems in life.  They also helped me to grasp the concepts of how we relate to God in times of crisis and also how we choose to respond.  The big idea that I pulled out of this book is that when we find ourselves facing a plan b situation, we get to decide how to respond.  If you can step outside of the situation and see it for what it really is before you do something crazy, then your chances improve for how you will come out of the situation.

I can’t help but think about Nashville, TN as I am writing this.  Over the weekend Nashville was slammed with a crazy amount of rain and I have seen pictures of houses under water and cars floating down the highway.  I know right now there are a lot of people there who are facing a plan b.  It reminds me of my basement flooding last summer.  Our insurance did not cover the event that caused our flood so we were out of luck and had to clean it up all on our own.  We lost some furniture and some other things, but for the most part we got pretty lucky.  I was then able to refinish the basement the way that I wanted to, but it was not a usable space for 6 months.  We are still recovering from that event, but I cannot even imagine what my Nashville friends will be dealing with as they begin to clean things up.

I would recommend this book to anyone because your plan b might be very different from disasters like flooding.  I am in a plan b right now that scares me and gets me excited at the same time.  It is not so much a crisis as it is a change of plans.  I am doing a lot of praying and waiting right now and this book encouraged me that I don’t have to have the blueprints or the plan laid out in front of me.  God is the planner and I get to participate.  So I pray and wait because God has all of the details figured out and it is not for me to worry about.  So go pick up the book at any of your local Christian Bookstores or you can purchase it online from Amazon at the link below.
