My most recent book is called ‘Fresh Start’ by Doug Fields. I picked Doug’s book because he has been doing Youth Ministry for over 20 years and I have benefited from many resources that he has created including ‘Purpose Driven Youth Ministry’. It was fun to read something that is aimed at more than just the Youth Ministry crowd. ’Fresh Start’ lays out practical ways to deal with a very common problem among Christians. Choosing to be a follower of Jesus is not an easy path and I often find myself feeling kind of stuck. I might be stuck struggling with a particular sin, or maybe I just feel discouraged with the world around me. This book makes an attempt to help us get unstuck.
I love how Fields takes something that could be messy and complicated and manages to put it into very clear and easy to understand practices. This is not an attempt at a 12 step process for getting unstuck guaranteeing that you will avoid being stuck for the rest of your life. It actually deals with many aspects of stickiness. I found some parts were not much of an issue for me, but others seemed to be written about my life. I found it very helpful in finding new strategies to fight stickiness and I will probably keep this book handy to reread when I need it. I would recommend this book to anyone who feels that their choice to follow Jesus has not brought them the joy that they expected.
