I have not been very good about blogging this series because it has required more of my time during the week. I would like to try to get caught up here a little bit on what I have been learning over the last 3 weeks.
Week 1 – We have assumptions about Jesus that are shaped by our church, our family, and the circles of people that we prefer to run around with. Jesus was not a hippie who just wanted peace so everyone could be happy. Jesus was not an American running for any office. He was not a Republican or a Democrat. Jesus was not the Hallmark Card baby Jesus. Jesus was not Ned Flanders or all about us being comfortable. Jesus was not just a really good teacher. He was either the son of God or he was a lunatic. It’s your choice. God made us in His image. Unfortunately we are always trying to make God into our own image. How do you see Jesus?
Week 2 – Jesus was not fair. Jesus forgave everyone their sin debt and the sinners love him for it, but the religious people hate him for it because they have been busting their tails to not be sinners. We all get the same reward.
Quote of the Week – “Too many people have given us the finger when it comes to who Jesus is.” – Joe Boyd Explanation: Everyone is pointing to who Jesus is from their different perspectives. Many of us only know Jesus by how other people are pointing. So we must investigate for ourselves who Jesus is to make up our own mind instead of feeding off of what other people are pointing to.
Week 3 – Surrender – What does it really mean to join Jesus’ revolution? When Jesus asked Simon/Peter to follow him, Simon left all of those fish on the shore that would have fed his family for weeks. He gave up everything to follow Jesus. Luke 5:1-11. In Luke 7:36-50, the prostitute gave up her profession just like Simon when she dumped her calling card perfume on Jesus’ feet. It is not easy to surrender and give up everything that we know to follow Jesus. Our inability to surrender to authority is a reflection to our trust in God. God created us and we belong to Him. We must give back to God what is already His. We must give ourselves back to God.
