One Life – The Inner Life

Joe talked about the Inner Life on Saturday at VCC.  Our Inner Life keys into our intimacy with God.  These are some of my notes and insights.

Have you ever seen a need in your church and jumped at the chance to start up a new ministry?  Often this is how things get started.  After you get the ball rolling, you realize that you cannot do it on your own, so you begin recruiting a community to support your vision.  Down the road everything kind of falls apart and you realize it is because the foundation of your ministry was not built with God’s support, but on your strength alone.

The right way to go is to begin with intimacy with God.  Your community should form around God and then He will give you a vision for a ministy.  At this point, everything is in line and you have solid foundation to work with.

Prophets in the Bible are equivalent to Jedis.

When God sent Samuel to anoint the new King of Israel, Samuel met each one of the sons of Jesse.  The older sons all had qualities that made them look like they were born to be kings, but that was not who God had selected.  Samuel finally met David, the smallest, youngest, and weakest of all of the children.  This is who God had selected to be the next King of Israel.  God knew the heart of David and that is what was most important.  It was all about the condition of his heart, not his strength, knowlege, or his ninja skills.

Jesus talks about the heart

  1. The state of our heart determines how we respond to God’s message. Luke 8:15
  2. A hard heart prevents us from knowing God.  Matthew 13:14-15
  3. We can say and do all of the right things, but our hearts are still far from God.  Mark 7:6-7 It is not about the stuff you do.
  4. Good hearts = Good people.  Bad hearts = Bad people.  Luke 6:45
  5. Our treasures form our heart.  Matthew 6:20-22
  6. Loving God with our whole heart is the best thing we can do.  Matthew 22:36-37

How can I change my heart?  I can’t so stop trying.  You can’t help you.  But Jesus can give you water that will flow from your heart and this will fix your heart.

Jesus is alive and in our hearts, so why is our hearts still messed up?
Because we don’t always believe that we are with him.
Are you listening to your heart?
Just want to be with Jesus everyday.
Create some space in your life, heart, mind for God.
