We very rarely experience a dull day at my house. With my kids, it seems that everyday is an adventure. This is the first Easter in a while that we had not planned to go out of town. We have had so much going on this month that this weekend was supposed to be a little more low key than recent weekends. Unfortunately things did not work out as planned.
Friday, K.C. woke up with a pretty good fever and was acting pretty irritable. We thought that it could be her teeth and gave her the usual fever fighting dosage of Tylenol and continued to monitor things. Her fever was still high on the Tylenol, so we went to the Urgent Care on Friday evening when it opened. We spent over 5 hours there while they checked everything out. Faith was with K.C. and Ephriam and I watched basketball in the waiting room. The kids were really good for us fortunately, but that was not how I had planned to spend my Friday evening.
The doctors found that K.C. had pneumonia, but it had really just started that day because they could not hear it with the stethoscope. So we got some antibiotics and took her home. We were happy to know what the problem was so that we would not be hanging waiting for test results having to return the next day.
Saturday, Faith went to help in the Discovery Land (Nursery) at our church. I stayed home with the kids and played. K.C. was much more the normal child on Saturday and was happy playing. No high fevers or anything like that. Things were looking great. Then I received the phone call. The Nurse Practitioner from Children’s Hospital called and said that they found bacteria in one of her blood samples and that they needed to see her that night. Faith was at church and I tried to call her cell phone, but she was not getting a signal. So I loaded the kids into the car and drove all the way to church to reach her. She took K.C. down to Children’s and I took Ephriam home to go to bed.
After several more hours of testing, everything was looking good as far as any indications that there might be another problem. They have to redraw the blood test and check it again hoping that the first was a false positive. It is possible that the first test could have been contaminated by bacteria from her skin. So they came home last night around 1 AM. Now we just hope that the phone does not ring today from Children’s. If they find bacteria again, she will have to go back. They told us that no news is good news and to just keep her on the antibiotic.
So today we celebrate Christ risen thankful that my little girl is at home with us. The Easter Bunny has visited and for now life is in order. I hope that this will be the end of this short adventure.
